For those with dark skin tones, black gums may be a natural coloring. On the other hand, recently developed black gums or black patches on your gums could be a sign of health problems. Melanotic macules, smoking, amalgam tattoos, drugs, some (systemic) disorders, and cancer are among the conditions that might result in black gums. While there are a few choices for treating black spots on the gums, it's not always required. Similar to skin tone, gums are not all the same hue. Gums are often darker in those with higher melanin levels. Thus, for some people, having black gums may be completely normal. However, if you don't naturally have black gums, it could be a sign of a medical problem, a pharmaceutical side effect, or smoking-related damage. Gum pigmentation may be benign, or noncancerous. It may, nevertheless, also be a sign of more serious illnesses, such as malignant melanoma of the mouth. Consequently, you should schedule an evaluation with a dentist or other healthcare expert if you notice black spots on your gums.
